The 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place on Sunday, May 29, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Scott Dixon captured the pole position for the 2022 Indy 500 with a four-lap average speed of 234.06. Dixon won the 2008 Indianapolis 500. Since his win, Dixon has raced in the Indy 500 every year since then. He has two runner-up finishes during that time. His most recent second-place finish came in 2020; last year, Dixon started on the pole and finished in 17th place.
Last year, Helio Castroneves won his record-tying fourth Indianapolis 500. He shares that record with Al Unser, Rick Mears, and A.J. Foyt. Castroneves will look to break that four-way tie in 2022. He starts the race in the 27th position.

2022 Indianapolis 500 picks
Scott Dixon
Scott Dixon is currently in the number five spot in the 2022 IndyCar Series Standings with 133 points. Dixon does not have any wins this season, but he has finished in the top five twice and inside the top-10 five times.
The 2022 edition of the Indy 500 marks the first time Dixon will start on the pole in 2022. His best start of the 2022 season came on March 20, when he began the Grand Prix of Texas in the fifth position. He finished that race in fifth.
Dixon ended 2022 fourth in points. He had one win last year, taking first place on May 1 at the Grand Prix of Texas.
Alex Palou
Alex Palou will start the 106th edition of the Indianapolis 500 right next to Scott Dixon. Palou earned his spot by qualifying with an average speed of 233.499. He has competed in the Indy 500 in the past two years, starting in the top-10 in 2020 and 2021. Last year Palou finished second, 0.4928 behind the winner, Helio Castroneves.
Palou is currently the No. 2 racer in the IndyCar standings with 156 points. He has three top-five finishes and four top-10 places. Palou is coming off a second-place finish at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. He started that race in the 18th spot.
Palou finished the 2021 IndyCar Series in the No. 1 position in the standings with 549 points. He had three wins, two runner-ups,s and two third-place finishes. In total, Palou finished inside the top-10 12 times last year.
Josef Newgarden
Despite starting in the 14th spot, Josef Newgarden is getting serious consideration to win the 2022 Indy 500. Newgarden qualified with an average speed of 231.580. A two-time IndyCar Series winner, Newgarden is fourth in points in 2022 with 140. Newgarden has two top-10 finishes this year, with both of those finishes being victories. He won the Grand Prix of Long Beach and the Grand Prix of Texas. He is coming off a 25th place finish in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Newgarden has started all five races he has competed in this year inside the top-10.
Our pick
Alex Palou had a great performance last year, and because of that and the experience he has gained since then, I think he will walk away as the winner of the 2022 Indy 500.
Pick: Alex Palou to win the 2022 Indianapolis 500.
