The Memphis Grizzlies had the best regular season in franchise history this season when the team finished in second place in the NBA’s Western Conference with a 56-26 record. On Friday, the No. 2 team in the West looks to close out its first-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, who finished in the No. 7 spot in the West. If the Grizzlies win on Friday, it will be the team’s first trip to the second round of the NBA Playoffs.

Memphis took the advantage in the series on Tuesday, April 26 with a 111-109 win at home. The series moves to Minnesota for Game 6.

Grizzlies vs. Timberwolves Game 6 odds

Memphis Grizzlies breakdown and analysis

With the Grizzlies vs. Timberwolves series knotted at 2-2, the best player on the Memphis squad put the team on his shoulders for a big win in Game 5. Ja Morant, who opened the playoffs with 32 points in Game 1, fell off in the next three games, scoring 23, 16 and 11, put up 30 points in the 111-109 win over Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Eighteen of Morant’s points came in the fourth quarter and he scored the last 13 points of the games for the Grizzlies. Memphis was 11 points down at the start of the final quarter.

The Game 5 win was another big come from behind victory for the Grizzlies, who erased a 21-point deficit in Game 3 to win 104-95.

Despite the spotlight shining on Morant, Desmond Bane is leading the team in scoring in the postseason. Bane, who averaged 18.2 points per game in the regular season, has averaged 23.6 points per game in the playoffs. Bane had 25 points in Game 5. His series high of 34 points came in the teams 119-118 loss in Game 4.

Minnesota Timberwolves breakdown and analysis

Karl-Anthony Towns took some heat for his Game 3 performance against the Grizzlies when he scored eight points with five rebounds on 33 minutes of play. However, outside of that game, Towns has put up a double-double in each of the other four games of the series. Overall, Towns is averaging 22.6 points per game with 11 rebounds.

Anthony Edwards is the Timberwolves leading scorer in the series. Over the five-game series, he is averaging 24.2 points per game on 37.2 minutes of play. Edwards scored 22 points in Game 5, but his field-goal percentage of 40 percent in that game was his lowest of the series.

Minnesota needs to play more consistently with the lead. They cannot let a team with the talent of Ja Morant back into the game, which they did in Games 3 and 5.

2021-22 NBA season series

The Memphis Grizzlies and the Minnesota Timberwolves played four times during the 2021-22 NBA regular season. The teams split that series 2-2. Over franchise history, the Grizzlies and Timberwolves have played 101 times in the regular season. The Timberwolves hold a 51-50 all-time lead.

Our Pick

I expect Memphis to have the momentum in this game. They closed out Game 5 in a big way and the team’s first trip to the second round of the NBA Playoffs is on the line on Friday. Look for a motivated performance from the Grizzlies.

Pick: Memphis Grizzlies to beat Minnesota Timberwolves.
