Suns vs. Pelicans Game 3 odds
Phoenix Suns breakdown and analysis
The Phoenix Suns handled the New Orleans Pelicans in Game 1 of their Western Conference playoff series. Disaster struck for the Suns during the third quarter of Game 2. The Suns were down 77-74 when the team’s best player — and leading scorer — Devin Booker, left the court with a hamstring injury. The Pelicans capitalized on Booker leaving. New Orleans won the game 125-114.
Despite playing only 25 minutes in Game 2, Booker finished as the Sun’s leading scorer with 31 points. No other player scored more than the 19 points that Mikal Bridges had on 40 minutes of play.
The Suns have not announced Booker’s status for Game 3 as of this writing.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Suns were without Booker for 14 games during the 2021-22 NBA season. The team went 8-6 in those games.
New Orleans Pelicans breakdown and analysis
Brandon Ingram has stepped up his game during the first two games of the New Orleans Pelicans’ playoff series against the Phoenix Suns. Ingram averaged 22.7 points per game during the regular season. He has bumped that average to 27.5 points per game in the series against the Suns. On Tuesday, Ingram put up 37 points in the win over Phoenix.
C.J. McCollum is also playing well for the Pelicans in the post-season. He has averaged 24 points in the two games against Phoenix.
The Pelicans did what they needed to do with Booker off the court, but that job will be more difficult in Game 3. If Booker does not play, the Suns will be able to plan for his absence ahead of time and that will make it harder for New Orleans to get the win.
2021-22 NBA season series
The Suns and the Pelicans played four times during the 2021-22 NBA regular season. Phoenix won three of the four games (131-115, 123-110, 112-100). The one game New Orleans won took place in Phoenix. Devin Booker played in all four of those games for the Suns.
The Suns are not a one player team and so they should be able to absorb the loss of Booker against the Pelicans. With or without Booker, I expect New Orleans to be very aggressive in Game 3 and look to push and test the Suns. I think Phoenix will pass that test.
Pick: Phoenix to beat New Orleans.
