The Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors are in the 2022 NBA Western Conference Finals. This is the second time the teams have met in the NBA playoffs. The first time came in 2007 when the Mavericks were the No. 1 seed in the West, and the Warriors were the No. 8 seed. The Warriors won that series in six games.
This season, Golden State was the No. 3 seed, and the Mavericks were No. 4. Golden State, who missed the playoffs in 2020 and 2021 after five straight trips to the NBA Final — and three NBA Championships — defeated the Denver Nuggets (4-1) and Memphis Grizzlies (4-2) to earn their spot in the Western Conference Finals.
The Mavericks have not gone this deep into the NBA playoffs since winning the NBA title in 2011. Since then, Dallas has missed the postseason on four occasions and been eliminated in the first round six times. The past two seasons, the Los Angeles Clippers ended the Mavericks’ playoff run in Round 1. This year, Dallas defeated the Utah Jazz (4-2) and Phoenix Suns (4-3) to make their way to the Western Conference Finals.
The Golden State Warriors won Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 112-87.

Mavericks vs. Warriors Game 2 picks
Dallas Mavericks breakdown and analysis
The Dallas Mavericks did not have a good performance against the Golden State Warriors in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. Luka Doncic had his worst game of the 2022 postseason with 20 points and a 33 percent field goal percentage, which was an enormous drop from the 35 and 63.2 percent he shot in the team’s Game 7 win over the Phoenix Suns.
The Mavericks attempted 48 3-point shots and connected on 11 of them, and the team was outrebounded 28-18 in the first half of Game 1.
If the Mavericks want to go deep in this series, they need more from Doncic, who averaged 32.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and seven assists in the series against the Suns.
Golden State Warriors breakdown and analysis
Where the Golden State Warriors have to shut down one player, the Dallas Mavericks have to worry about an incredibly deep Warriors roster. In-Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, seven Warriors players scored in double digits vs. four for the Mavericks. All five of the starters had at least 10 points — led by Steph Curry’s 21 — Jordan Poole and Otto Porter Jr. added 19 and 10 of the Golden State bench.
On the defensive side of the ball, Andrew Wiggins did a fantastic job defense against Doncic. If he can deliver that kind of performance in every game against the Mavericks’ star, this series could end very quickly for Dallas.
Our Pick
Golden State is a deep team. The Dallas Mavericks learned that in Game 1. While I expect some changes to result in an improved performance from the Mavericks in Game 2, I don’t think those adjustments will be enough to overcome the Warriors.
Pick: Golden State Warriors to beat the Dallas Mavericks.
