Through 54 holes of the PGA Championship, the leaderboard is littered with unheralded players who haven’t won on the grandest stage.

Chilean Mito Pereira has opened up a three shot edge over Matt Fitzpatrick and 36-hole leader Will Zalatoris. The top four players (including Cameron Young), have yet to win a single time on the PGA Tour, making the final round very intriguing.

Before the tournament, Zalatoris (+3500) and Fitzpatrick (+4500) were not among the favorites to secure their first major title, while Pereira was a deep sleeper to get the job done. Big names combatants and major champions like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson all faded on moving day, giving way to the youthful inexperienced competitors.

Tiger Woods struggled in his morning round amid difficult conditions, barely breaking 80 as he made a par putt on the final hole to shoot 79. Having endured the pain through three days, he withdrew from the event Saturday evening, which marks the first time as a professional he withdrew from a major championship.

Read on to see the updated odds and best value bets heading into Sunday’s final round.

Not only have the top four golfers never won on the PGA Tour, the fifth and sixth place players (Abraham Ancer and Seamus Power), both have just one victory each.

Mito Pereira Searching For First Major

Mito Pereira was in the final group on Saturday and got off to a strong start with two birdies in his first five holes. It appeared the moment had gotten too big for him mid-way through his day, as he bogeyed four holes in a five hole stretch.

However, he rebounded to shoot three under the last six to shoot 69. The 100th ranked player in the world does have three Korn Ferry Tour victories in 2020 and 2021, and came in posting four straight top-30’s on the PGA Tour. This, however, will be his first 54-hole lead at a major.

Pereira is second in strokes gained: putting through three rounds and third in SG: tee-to-green. His current price of +140 is simply too low to stomach a wager on.

Though Matt Fitzpatrick hasn’t won stateside, he does have seven DP World Tour victories, has played in two Ryder Cups and has nine top-20’s in his last 11 worldwide starts. We’ve been on him after the first and second rounds when his odds were +2000 to win outright.

You can’t get that good a number on him now as he’s priced at +330, but Fitzpatrick has been building to this moment for the last number of years, and he plays best when conditions are tough and when par is a good score. For the campaign, he’s tops in total strokes gained, showing he has a great all around game suited to majors.

2022 PGA Championship Best Live Value Picks

  1. Cameron Young (+800): Cameron Young was one of our picks pre-tournament as a sleeper at +8000 because he’s already racked up three runners-ups in his rookie season. His last two tournaments yielded second and third place finishes, and he’s first in SG: off-the-tee thus far. Young sits in fourth, and he’s shot 66 or better in three of his last four final rounds.
  2. Abraham Ancer (+1600): Unlike the top four golfers on the board, Abraham Ancer does have a title to his credit, having taken the WGC-Fed Ex Invitational last year. He is five adrift, but presents decent value after all the top players have super short odds at +1600.
