Following a 1-0 win at Berlin’s Olimpiastadion in the first leg last Thursday, Hamburg knows that a win or a draw will be enough to secure its return to the Bundesliga. The team has been in German soccer’s second tier since the first relegation in team history followed the 2017-18 season.

For Hertha, Monday’s game is looking like a case of deja-vu all over again, having suffered relegation in its only other appearance in this game, coming at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Over/Under and Spread

While Hamburg is the favorite, with momentum and the home crowd on its side, Hertha is by no means out of this contest. Given the low-scoring nature of the first leg, and with so much to play for, an Under 2.5 goals odds of -130 is hardly surprising.  But seeing that Hamburg need only a draw to advance, taking Hertha on the Asian handicap might be worth looking at, with the visitors listed as -143 at +0.5.

Momentum On Hamburg’s Side

Having finished fourth in Bundesliga 2 for three seasons in succession, missing out on promotion by a combined six points in  total, the Red Shorts will feel that this is there time. The 57th-minute goal by Ludovit Reis in the first leg will have done little to  dampen their enthusiasm, with the club no standing just 90 minutes away from a return to the top flight.

Sights Set On Sixth Successive Victory

If the opening-leg victory in Berlin wasn’t enough to generate momentum ahead of Monday’s second leg, Hamburg’s recent form will surely do it. Tim Walter’s team has now won five consecutive matches in all competitions. By and large, it has done it with a free-scoring style, too, with his team scoring 14 goals and conceding just five across that span.

However, the Red Shorts did lose when the two teams last played each other at Volksparkstadion, back in 2018, and although Hamburg needs only a draw here to wrap up promotion, there hasn’t been a draw between the sides in 11 years.

Hertha’s Away-Day Woes

If there’s an area of concern that any Hertha fan will likely point to, it is the team’s road form. Felix Magath’s team has won away from home just once since October, and the team has now loss three straight matches heading into this game. Hertha lost to Borussia Dortmund and Mainz before coming a cropper at home to Hamburg.

However, if there is any ray of hope for Hertha it is that it has won two of its last three against Hamburg.  On top of that, only one Bundesliga team has suffered relegation via the relegation playoff in the past nine years, and the  top-tier club has won the playoff in 17 of its 23 iterations.

However, for Hertha, the memories will be only too fresh, having been relegated in this fashion 10 years ago.

Hertha Berlin vs Hamburg Best Bet

With Hamburg just 90 minutes away from a return to the top flight, the onus really is on Hertha Berlin to carry the play here. But given the lengthy injury list, and Hamburg’s imperious form and momentum of late, the home side will quite happily settle for a draw here.

Best bet: Draw (+235)
