The world’s best teams of mixed doubles curlers will descend upon Geneva, Switzerland from 23–30 April 2022. They’ll be competing for the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Championship, and we have the best bets you should be making on the eventual winner. Give this a read for a complete betting guide to the upcoming international competition.

At the moment, the top online sportsbooks have yet to post betting lines for the tourney winner. Though, we expect that to change before Saturday when the competition officially starts. Regardless, we have a pretty good idea of which nations will be favored to win by the bookies. The top contenders might look something like this:

Who’s Competing At The 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship?

Originally, the field was supposed to consist of 20 teams. Then it was changed to 16 (due to the cancellation of the World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event 2022, where four teams were going to earn qualification). But after a Board decision, there will in fact be 20 countries competing at the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.

Teams span all over the globe for this international affair. They are split into groups, which consist of the following:

  • Group A: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland
  • Group B: Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Hungary, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, and United States

Originally, Russia and China were slated to compete but were replaced. Russia was removed due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, while China pulled out due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the country.

How Does The 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship Work?

Like most curling tourneys, the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship works under a round-robin format, at first at least. This stage lasts from April 23-28 and means every team inside the group will play one another. Only the top three teams from each group will advance to the playoffs.

However, it does pay to win the group outright. That’s because these two teams automatically qualify for the semi-finals. The other four playoff-bound teams must face one another in an extra qualification game.

But gold medals aren’t the only thing on the line in Geneva. Some teams will be fighting to stay in next year’s championships. That’s because two bottom-placing teams will be relegated in 2023 to the aforementioned World Mixed Doubles Qualification Event. They would have to win there to return for the 2023 championship, but there are no guarantees like the non-relegated teams.

Moreover, we should make a note about the two-player format of the tourney — a departure from the usual of four players. With teams of two, there are only six stones, not eight. Sweeping can be done by both team members. There’s no alternate either, just one male and one female competitor per side.

Betting Picks To Win Gold At 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship?

With a 20-team field, it’s in your best interest to place at least two bets to win gold at the 2022 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship. The field is too chaotic (and the eventual betting odds will reflect that) to effectively “put all your eggs in one basket.” So with that said, our picks below consist of one Group A country and one from Group B. Here’s who we’re most confident in winning:

In Group A, the Italians have to be the team to beat. Why? We’ll because they’re the reigning Olympic champions. Just a few short months ago in Beijing, the duo of Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner become Italy’s first curling Olympic champions ever by defeating Norway 8-5 in the finale. Not only that, but the pair went completely undefeated at the Winter Games with an unblemished 11-0 mark.

Norway is drawn into the same group A so that’s an Olympic rematch to mark on your calendar (it goes down on April 27). But given Italy’s sheer dominance in Beijing, this is not only their game to lose but the whole bracket too. They are practically must-bet material in our book until someone can finally topple them, which remains to be seen.

Akin to our Italy pick, Scotland also draws a bet from us due to their championship pedigree. They won this very event a year ago, beating Norway (who seemingly can’t win the “big one”). However, it will not be the same Scottish team from last year. Scotland is bringing Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie to the fold this time instead (not Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat).

But dare we say, the Scottish might’ve actually upgraded on the ice with its new team? We mean Muirhead is fresh off leading Great Britain to an Olympic gold medal (in upset fashion too). Lammie, on the other hand, earned a silver medal in Beijing with the Britain team. We really believe Muirhead is the best female player in the game, which should valet the Scottish to championship contention here.
