Need betting advice for MotoGP’s next race on Sunday, April 24? You’ll want to read this then! We have a full betting preview, plus our best bets to win the 2022 MotoGP Portugal Grand Prix.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s take a gander at the current betting odds, shall we? Every rider in the grid has a line to win but the below names are currently favored most to win by the top-used online sportsbooks.

We’re not going to lie, Quartarto being marked as the favorite comes as a surprise to us. This is where he’s placed each of the four previous races in 2022: ninth, second, eighth, and seventh. Yes, he won the 2021 event here, but that feels like a millennium ago at this point. The Yamaha bike isn’t in tip-top shape so spoiler alert, Quartararo will NOT be one of our bets at this event. Keep reading to find out who we ARE backing in the grid with a wager.

2022 MotoGP Portugal Grand Prix Preview

After four flyaway away races, MotoGP is starting its European leg of the season this weekend. As has become standard, the Algarve International Circuit will host the 2022 MotoGP Portugal Grand Prix. This track has been a fixture in the MotoGP calendar for the past two years. The 2020 race was won by Miguel Oliviera.

Speaking of Oliviera, he has a previous win this season (in Indonesia), but hasn’t kept up in the MotoGP riders standings. He’s all the way down to ninth place and trending down (finishing 18th at the Americas). Oliviera’s up-and-down performance is illustrative of the parity across the league. Ten different riders have placed in the podium after a mere four races.

The only repeat podium winners have been Enea Bastianini and Alex Rins, who not coincidentally, are ranked one and two in the standings, respectively. Bastianini has 61 points thanks to a pair of first-place wins. However, despite no wins, Rins is right on his tail with 56 points.

Right after the Portugal race, MotoGP’s best will be right back the next weekend with the Spain Grand Prix. From there, the European slog continues until September 25 — the first non-European event which goes down in Japan. Brace yourself because this is the point in the season where the contenders and pretenders separate themselves, and that goes for bettors too, not just MotoGP riders.

2022 Portugal Grand Prix Betting Picks

Did you see how lopsided the betting odds to win this race are? Welp, they are, which means two things. One, it won’t be easy to pick a single winner. Two, betting multiple ways is the best way to pick a winner — and not sacrifice too much profit either. Therefore, we strongly urge you to “spread the wealth” when making 2022 Portugal Grand Prix betting picks. Here’s the riders that should be atop your to-bet list:

Enea Bastianini

It’s not just that Bastianini is stacking wins so far, it’s how he’s doing so. Case in point the most recent Circuit of the Americas: the Ducati rider is blazing past competitors. Bastianini’s win became the fastest ever at COTA by a margin. The performance also gave Ducati its first-ever win at the track, ending the stranglehold Marc Marquez and Honda have had historically in south Texas.

Bastianini is red-hot right now, which warrants our bet. But to play devil’s advocate, in two appearances at Algarve in 2021, he finished ninth both times. Though, the second time out was more impressive than it seems. At one point in that race, Bastianini was 16th before mounting a comeback to ninth. But with how fast he’s riding this year, we envision him starting upfront and staying there throughout the race. Take him to win here!

Joan Mir

A rider that’s flying under the radar so far is Joan Mir. The 2020 world champion hasn’t placed on the podium, but he’s been dangerously close with two back-to-back fourth-place finishes. Mir has been a model of consistency so far this season. On top of those finishes in fourth, he also has two sixth-place runs this season. All that is good enough to have him fourth overall in the standings.

Mir returns to an Algarve track where he’s had plenty of recent success. In two races here a year ago, Mir earned two podium visits. That might just be the remedy he needs this year to “get over the hump.” Take his +900 betting line, which is “bang for your buck” given his winning and consistent pedigree.
