It’s becoming a bit of a habit to see the Bruins and Hurricanes face off against each other in the postseason. While they didn’t meet last year, the Bruins took out the Hurricanes 4-1 in 2020 and swept them 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Final in 2019.
Unlike those years, Boston will be playing the role of underdog as Carolina are -122 favorites to win the first round series in the NHL odds.

The series opens in Carolina on Monday night followed by the second game on Wednesday. The action heads up to Boston for games 3 and 4 on Friday and a 12:30 pm start on Sunday. If necessary, game 5 will be back in Carolina the next Tuesday and game 6 will be in Boston on the Thursday.
With home ice advantage, the Hurricanes would host a win or go home game 7 if the series went the distance on Saturday, May 14th.
Boston Bruins Betting Analysis
Only nine points separated Bruins and Hurricanes in the standings even though the Canes are division winners and the Bruins a Wild Card playoff team. This might be the tightest first round matchup of the playoffs as these two are neck and neck in the Eastern Conference odds.
Of course, Boston has the experience and post season success of Bergeron and Marchand that the Hurricanes can’t match. The two veterans continued their stellar play this year with Bergeron the favorite to add another Selke Trophy to his collection.

The biggest question for the Bruins lies in goal. Head coach Bruce Cassidy is keeping somewhat coy with regards to who will start game one of the series, between Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman. Bruins fans let their feelings known about who’d they want to be in net in the playoffs when Tuukka Rask was attempting a comeback.
Who should be the Bruins’ starting goalie in Game 1 of the playoffs?
— NBC Sports Boston (@NBCSBoston) January 13, 2022
Both netminders had very similar stats this year, but Swayman, who was making noise in the Calder Trophy odds this year, allowed four goals in his final game of the season. Although Boston sat out a number of regulars in that one, it’s more likely Cassidy goes with Ullmark, instead of starting his rookie in game one.
Are Hurricanes Ready to Break Through in NHL Playoffs?
The Hurricanes have the worst 2022 Stanley Cup odds of any division winner this season. It seems as if the oddsmakers don’t feel they’re quite ready to take the next step.
They also have concerns in goal where Frederik Andersen missed the last two weeks of the season with a lower body injury. His status for game one remains up in the air. Andersen hasn’t had much playoff success anyway, but you can bet head coach Rod Brind’Amour wants the Vezina Trophy odds candidate between the pipes if he’s healthy.
Brind’Amour said Andersen has not been skating but doing lot of off-ice work. No other update.

Antti Raanta would be in goal for Carolina if Andersen can’t go. Regardless of who is in net, the Hurricanes are still favored to win this series because of the stifling team defense they play. Allowing just 2.4 goals per game, the Hurricanes were the best defensive team in the league this season.

There’s no team that played the Bruins better this year than Carolina. Boston mustered no offense in their three contests, and that’s almost a literal fact. The Bruins were outscored 16-1 getting shutout twice in their head-to-head meetings.
Boston vs Carolina Series Prediction
Fans of the Bruins are probably well aware of how difficult the Hurricanes played their team this year. However, they can take solace in the fact that the last time they met was almost three months ago.
Both teams made trade deadline acquisitions to bolster their roster, with Hampus Lindholm being a huge add to an already solid Bruins blue line. The Canes never beat Boston with the roster they now have in place.
Just wanna note that the Bruins are 6-0-0 when Hampus Lindholm, David Pastrnak, and Linus Ullmark are all in the lineup this season.

Carolina ended the season on a six game winning streak, but five of those games were against teams that didn’t make the playoffs. It’s a different ballgame in the post season and one the Bruins know how to play as wel as any team in the league. If they go up a game or two against the Canes, who knows how Carolina will handle it.
Remember, the Hurricanes won just one out of nine playoff games between these two teams in their last two post season meetings which weren’t long ago. Expect the experience of the Bruins to come to the forefront once again and take them to upset the Hurricanes in round one.
Pick: Boston Bruins Moneyline (+100)
