New York, Philadelphia Probable Pitchers

In the opener, Max Scherzer (4-0, 2.61) is expected to take the mound for the Mets and be opposed by Kyle Gibson (2-1, 2.93). Scherzer will have six days between starts and Gibson will have seven days.

Scherzer vs Gibson

4-0 Record 2-1
2.61 ERA 2.93
2.64 xERA 3.08
0.81 WHIP 1.08
4.67 SO/W 2.17

Undefeated through his first five starts after signing a three-year, $130-million contract as a free agent in the offseason, Scherzer had his rockiest outing of the season last Sunday yet still beat the Phillies in New York. He allowed four runs on five hits in six innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Scherzer is a Phillies killer with a 16-4 career record and 2.60 ERA against them in 27 starts. At Citizens Bank Park, he is 9-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 13 starts.

Scherzer had an eventful time since that outing.

Scherzer is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three road starts in 2022 and 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts in day games. At +600, he is the favorite in the NL Cy Young odds.

Jean Segura is 10 for 30 (.300) versus Scherzer with a home run and Kyle Schwarber is 3 for 9 with two homers. However, J.T. Realmuto is a sickly 6 for 55 (.109) with 17 strikeouts and Nick Castellanos has gone 2 for 14 (.143) while whiffing six times.

Gibson pitched 4.1 scoreless innings against the Mets on April 30 in New York in his last start but also issued five walks. New York managed two hits off Gibson and struck out three times.

Gibson has a 1-3 career record against the Mets with a 4.15 ERA in six starts.

This season, Gibson is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA at home in two starts. He pitched seven shutout innings to beat the visiting Oakland Athletics on April 9 in his lone start in the day.

Chris Bassitt (3-2, 2.61) is expected to start for the Mets in the second game against rookie left-hander Christopher Sanchez (0-0, 5.40). Bassitt will be pitching on five days of rest and Sanchez will have six days off between appearances.

Philadelphia Philles +120 +1.5 (-150) Under 8 (-117)

Odds as of May 8th at Barstool Sportsbook.

The Mets are -141 favorites on the moneyline, giving them an implied win probability of 58.51%.

Probable Pitchers Game 2

Bassitt struck out eight in seven innings but took the loss against the Atlanta Braves on Monday in New York in his last start. He allowed six hits, one walk and struck out eight.

Bassitt vs Sanchez Game 2

3-2 Record 0-0
2.61 ERA 5.40
3.21 xERA 3.28
0.94 WHIP 1.30
4.25 SO/W 2.00

There was a moment of humanity in the game.

This will be Bassitt’s first career appearance against the Phillies after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics in a trade in March.

Castellanos is 6 for 14 (.429) off Bassitt with three doubles and a home run.

Sanchez will be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make his second career start and 12th major league appearances. He takes the place of Zach Eflin, who was placed on the COVID-19 injured list before the game.

Sanchez began the season in the Phillies’ bullpen and allowed six runs in 10 innings over four appearances. His last outing was on May 1 before being optioned to Lehigh Valley. He did not appear in a game with the Iron Pigs.

In his last game with the Phillies, Sanchez pitched 1.2 innings against the Mets last Sunday in New York and was charged with one run.

Mets vs Phillies Betting Preview

On Thursday night, the Mets overcame a six-run deficit with a seven-run ninth inning that gave them the win in the series opener.

Starling Marte’s tiebreaking double was the big blow in the inning that included Brandon Nimmo tying the game at 7-7 with a two-run single. Lindor hit a two-run home run, Mark Canha had an RBI infield single, and J.D. Davis knocked in a run with a pinch-hit double.

It was the first time the Mets trailed by at least six runs in the ninth and won since 1997.

Bryce Harper and Castellanos homered for the Phillies. Castellanos later left the game after being hit on the wrist by a pitch but was scheduled to be in the lineup Saturday before the postponement.

Also Saturday, the Phillies placed shortstop Didi Gregorius on the injured list with a left knee sprain.

The Mets lead the season series 5-2, including winning three of four in Philadelphia. The Phillies won the season series three straight years from 2019-21, going 28-20 in that span.

Mets vs Phillies Prediction

Scherzer’s teams have won last 23 regular season starts, a streak that includes the Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers and Mets. It is hard to buck that trend. It is also hard to buck the Mets or back the Phillies in general right now, so look for a New York sweep on Mother’s Day.

Picks: Mets ML -162 in Game 1, Mets ML -141 in Game 2
