NHL Games – Wednesday, April 20

Oilers vs Stars

With a 4-0 shutout of the Golden Knights on Saturday, Edmonton locked up the No. 2 seed in the Pacific and a likely first-round matchup with the Los Angeles Kings. Their opponents on Wednesday night, the Dallas Stars, are also sitting pretty after Vegas’ surprising 3-2 loss to the Devils on Monday.

Rick Bowness’ club is four points up on VGK (with a game in hand) for the final Wild-Card spot in the Western Conference. They’re barely over .500 on the road (19-18-2), however, while the Oilers are 24-12-1 at Rogers Place. Look for Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to do some serious damage in this one.

Final score prediction: Oilers 5, Stars 3

Golden Knights vs Capitals

A rematch of the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals and a battle of two teams heading in starkly different directions. While the Golden Knights are on the verge of missing the postseason for the first time in franchise history, the Capitals are surging with six victories in their past seven games.

After defeating the Avalanche 3-2 on the road on Monday, Washington is in striking distance of Boston for the first Wild-Card spot in the East. That would land them a first-round matchup with the Hurricanes, rather than the Panthers, and that’s more than enough motivation to put an end to Vegas’ dwindling playoff hopes on Wednesday night.

Final score prediction: Capitals 4, Vegas 3 OT

Kraken vs Avalanche

At least Vegas took five years to miss the postseason. The Kraken accomplished that failure in their first year in existence after a disastrous NHL Expansion Draft by general manager Ron Francis. Woof. Seattle, however, has won their past two games and are in danger of ruining their draft positioning if they leap-frog Philadelphia to become the league’s fourth-worst squad.

In a dogfight with the Panthers for the President’s Trophy, Colorado should come out flying after a loss the Capitals on Monday. The Avalanche have the second-best road record in the NHL (24-10-3) and Seattle is seven-games under .500 in the Pacific Northwest.

Final score prediction: Avalanche 6, Kraken 2

Coyotes vs Blackhawks

This contest featuring two of the worst five teams in the NHL is at the bottom of the article for a reason. The Blackhawks have lost seven of their last eight games. One of those losses was a 3-2 overtime defeat to Arizona in early April – which coincidentally is also the last time the Coyotes won a game. That’s right – they’ve dropped seven straight. In this dumpster fire of a matchup, you might as well take the +140 odds and bet on the desert dogs.

Final score prediction: Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 2
