Two of the top Stanley Cup contenders heading into the NHL playoffs are in a lot of trouble heading into their respective Game 4s on the road. In the West, the Pacific-Division-champion Calgary Flames trail the No. 7-seed Dallas Stars 2-1, while the President-Trophy-winning Florida Panthers are down 2-1 to the East’s No. 8 seed, the Washington Capitals.

NHL Playoff Games- Monday, May 9
Capitals vs Panthers
Florida recorded an NHL-best 122 points this season, but they’re struggling against an experienced Capitals squad that has seven holdovers from its 2018 Stanley Cup championship. One of those players is of course Alex Ovechkin, who scored his 72nd career playoff goal (12th all-time) in Saturday’s 6-1 Game 3 win.
His countryman Sergei Bobrovsky may be replaced in the Panthers net after a rough outing. The two-time Vezina-winner has always struggled in the postseason with a 14-24 career record, 3.18 GAA and .901 save percentage.
Final score prediction: Capitals 4, Panthers 3 OT

Penguins vs Rangers
Maybe Igor Shesterkin is worn out after making 79 saves in a triple-overtime Game 1 loss. The Russian netminder was chased out of the net in the first period of Game 3 after allowing four goals on 15 shots. New York rallied to come back from a three-goal deficit before eventually falling 7-4 to Pittsburgh. Now in a 2-1 hole, the Blueshirts need a strong performance on the road against a Penguins club starting third-string goalie Louis Domingue.
Final score prediction: Rangers 4, Penguins 1
Stars vs Flames
While they entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference, the Stars sure know how to play playoff hockey. Don’t forget they reached the Stanley Cup Final just two years ago in Edmonton’s playoff bubble before losing to the Lightning in six games. Now with two-straight wins over the favored Flames, they have Darryl Sutter’s club on the ropes heading into Game 4.
Young netminder Jake Oettinger stopped 39 shots on Saturday after making 29 saves in Game 2 to secure a 2-0 shutout. Calgary’s three 40-goal scorers (Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm) must find a way to bulge the twine on Monday night.
Final score prediction: Flames 3, Stars 2 OT

Predators vs Avalanche
While the Capitals and Stars are showing just how unpredictable the Stanley Cup Playoffs are, the Avalanche are cruising through their first-round series with Nashville. After a 7-3 home loss on Saturday night, the Predators are on the verge of being swept for the first time in 15 playoff appearances.
Colorado will likely turn to backup Pavel Francouz after Darcy Kuemper was hit in the eye by an errant stick in Game 3, but it’s hard to imagine it making a difference. The Avs have a 137-81 shot advantage through three games, outscoring their over-matched opponents 16-6.
Final score prediction: Avalanche 4, Predators 3
