NHL Playoff Games- Monday, May 30

Hurricanes vs Rangers

Despite becoming the first team in NHL history to lose its first six road games in a single playoffs, Carolina is a -150 money line favorite to defeat New York. The Canes have not lost in PNC Arena since April 15 and are a staggering 25-4-3 in Raleigh since January 15, outscoring opponents 102-57.

Rod Brind’Amour’s club bounced back from a Game 6 loss against the Bruins in the first round to take the series on home ice, but the resilient Rangers may pose a stiffer challenge on Monday night. After all, the Blueshirts have won four do-or-die games in a row after trailing the Penguins 3-1 in Round 1.

Goaltending advantage?

Antti Raanta was pulled early in the second period of Carolina’s 5-2 loss on Saturday after permitting three goals on just 13 shots. However, the Finnish netminder has had an incredible postseason run in relief of the injured Frederik Andersen, with a 2.20 goals-against-average and .924 save percentage through 12 starts.

Those impressive numbers also improve dramatically at home where the 33-year-old has only allowed six goals on 171 shots for a sparkling 0.97 GAA and .965 save percentage.

Igor Shesterkin made 37 stops in Game 6 while becoming the fifth goalie in Stanley Cup Playoffs history to record two assists in a game. After struggling in the Penguins series, the Russian backstop has a .949 save percentage this series.

However, it is worth mentioning that he’s just 1-4 on the road this postseason with a 3.82 GAA and .881 Sv% versus 6-1, 2.04 GAA, .949 Sv% in Madison Square Garden.

Game 7 Game Pick

While the statistics above show that New York might not have the goaltending advantage they expect in Game 7, it feels silly to wager against the Vezina Trophy winner to be. If Shesterkin can bring his ‘A’ game and secure a Rangers victory, it would set up an epic duel against reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Lightning.

In the first year of a new TV contract with ESPN and TNT, Gary Bettman and the NHL would love to have the big-market Rangers on the big stage. While the Blueshirts could win without the benefit of a shady call or two, a couple opportune powerplays couldn’t hurt their cause in Game 7.

Final score prediction: Rangers 3, Carolina 2

New York +136 moneyline, UNDER 5.5 (-132)
